The Founder's Journey

The Idea

I’ve been a product manager for about 3 years now, and one thing that’s always been painfully hard is figuring out why users behave the way they do. Why are they churning? Why aren’t they converting? Where are they getting stuck? Recruiting the right users to talk to was an even bigger pain. Session replays had the answers, but going through them and trying to find patterns was exhausting. Chibi watches sessions for you and tells you what’s happening, why it’s happening, and how to fix it.

Idea Validation

I started by reaching out to other SaaS founders, indie hackers, and product people in my network. I asked them how they currently figured out why trial users didn’t convert. Almost everyone admitted they were guessing. They’d stare at Mixpanel dashboards, watch a few session replays, or run expensive user research, but none of it gave them the why. Some paid consultants, others just debated internally and hoped for the best. Hearing the same frustration I had was the first signal I was onto something. In total, I spoke to around 15–20 founders, and the consistency of their answers was striking. What surprised me most was how universal the pain was. Some wanted to understand why users never finished onboarding, others wanted to know why trial users never invited teammates, and some simply wanted to stop debating product changes based on gut feeling.

Development

Me and my cofounder wanted a stack that could handle real-time session processing without bankrupting us. The backend is Elixir + Phoenix with PostgreSQL for structured data and rrweb for capturing session replays. We chose Elixir because its lightweight BEAM processes let us handle thousands of replays concurrently. All of the code was custom written by us and the biggest technical challenge was reducing AI infrastructure costs.

Marketing & Growth

I got Chibi’s first 10 customers by doubling-down on the two places founders already knew me: niche communities and direct, founder-to-founder cold outreach. I'm doubling down on cold outreach, build in public and content marketing now :)

Takeaways

- Getting traction is a bit hard but all things you do are compounding - Build and ship fast as soon as possible and get people to try it out and iterate
